DStv Crew Member En Route to Uyo for AFCON Match Coverage Fatally Shot in Attack, 6 Others Rescued
Crew of DStv journalists traveling to cover an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match was attacked and kidnapped, with one member now confirmed dead, SaharaReporters has learned.>
The Anambra State Police Command reported that joint security forces led by the command successfully rescued six of the sports journalists who had been kidnapped while on their way to Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the rescue to SaharaReporters, stating that the media crew was abducted along the Isseke-Orlu Road in the Ihiala Local Government Area while traveling from Lagos to Uyo.Ikenga explained, “Joint security forces have rescued six members of the media crew who were abducted while traveling from Lagos to Uyo along the Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala.”
He added that the search for the seventh crew member was ongoing and that updates would be provided as more information became available.The crew of sports journalists was on their way to Uyo to cover the Super Eagles’ match against Libya in the ongoing AFCON qualifiers scheduled for Friday.
However, it was later learned on Thursday that the seventh member of the crew, who had not yet been rescued, was killed.A source revealed, “The DStv crew heading to Uyo for AFCON match coverage was attacked and kidnapped. One victim was shot dead during the army’s rescue of the seven people.”
The source further confirmed that the deceased was Kay, a technical crew member of the team.
