Breaking: FG cautions Okpebholo, asserts Edo governor lacks authority to suspend LGA chairmen
The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has clarified that state governors lack the constitutional power to suspend or remove local government chairmen from office.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Fagbemi addressed recent developments in Edo State, where Governor Monday Okpebholo suspended local government chairmen. He emphasized that such actions violate the autonomy of local governments as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.
“Governors have no authority to suspend or remove duly elected local government chairmen,” Fagbemi stated. “These actions undermine democracy and breach the rule of law,” he added.
