Atiku’s Aide: Jonathan is the Only Southern Candidate Capable of Challenging Tinubu in 2027
Demola Olarenwaju, the Digital Media Strategy aide to Atiku Abubakar, has suggested that former President Goodluck Jonathan is the only southern candidate who could successfully challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Olarenwaju emphasized that Jonathan has the advantage of being able to attract northern votes, given he has only one term left to serve, which contrasts with the prospect of another southerner potentially serving for eight years.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Olarenwaju explained that replacing Tinubu with another southerner, who could serve for two terms, would not be politically feasible due to ethnic sensitivities.
He pointed out that many Nigerians are more invested in the symbolic significance of having a president from their region rather than believing in substantial improvements to their lives.
Jonathan, who only served one term as president, was defeated by Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 election, but Olarenwaju’s comments suggest he remains a viable contender in the political landscape.
