Akpabio and Akume Step Up as Tinubu and Shettima Oversee Nigeria from Overseas
The Presidency has appointed Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and other key ministers to oversee the nation’s leadership while President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima are abroad.
In response to worries about a potential leadership gap, the presidency reassured citizens that governance remains stable. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, stated that both Tinubu and Shettima are still actively involved in national matters despite their absence.
Tinubu departed Nigeria on October 3 for a two-week working vacation, while Shettima is on an official trip to Sweden.“All government bodies are operating normally,” Onanuga confirmed. “The Senate President, along with ministers and other officials, is ensuring the government runs smoothly.”
He referenced similar circumstances during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, emphasizing that the president and vice president do not need to be physically present to fulfill their responsibilities. The statement concluded by affirming, “There is no leadership vacuum in Nigeria.”
