2023 Election: Why I Didn’t Support Peter Obi – Wike Explains

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has explained why he chose not to back Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, in the 2023 general election.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Wike said his decision was based on political strategy and a realistic assessment of Obi’s chances. He claimed Obi lacked the national structure and political machinery needed to win.
“No, he has no chance to win the election,” Wike stated bluntly when asked about his position on Obi. “I don’t go where you see people like this kind of social media candidate. I don’t do social media candidate.”
As reported by The Sun, Wike stressed that his political choices are driven by strategic analysis rather than online trends. While acknowledging Obi’s popularity among internet users, he emphasized that real-world politics depends on more than digital hype.
“As a politician, I analyse the candidates and assess who is most likely to win,” he said. “In politics, it’s not always about who is the best candidate. So many factors come into play.”
Wike’s comments highlight his skepticism about the influence of social media on election outcomes. According to him, a strong political base, alliances, and grassroots support are what truly matter in a national contest.
His remarks also reflect the stance he took during the 2023 elections, where he ultimately aligned with the coalition that backed the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its successful bid for power.
