Veteran Yoruba Broadcaster and Actor ‘Ereke Ni Shop’ Dies

Veteran Yoruba broadcaster, comic actor and presenter Chief Timothy Agboola, popularly known as “Ereke Ni Shop,” has died.

According to reports, the respected entertainer passed away on Wednesday at a private hospital in Lagos after battling a prolonged illness.

Agboola was known for his contributions to Yoruba broadcasting, comedy and cultural promotion. Over the years, he gained recognition for promoting Ijesa culture and tradition through his storytelling and comedic performances.

News of his death was announced by one of his associates, Idris Shogbola, in a post on social media.

“May the soul of our boss rest in peace. Pa Timothy Agboola ‘Ereke ni Shop’. Baba Oloye Repete… A broadcaster, actor, comedian. May God Almighty give you eternal rest in peace. Amen. Ereke ni Shop sun re o,” he wrote.

Agboola built a reputation as a Yoruba radio presenter and comedian known for his storytelling style and humour, often reflecting Yoruba traditions and social commentary in his works.

During his career, he collaborated with several entertainers, including Baba Alajeju, with some of his comedic works dating back to the 1970s.

He was also regarded as a protégé of the late Yoruba comedy legend Gbenga Adeboye (Funwontan). After Adeboye’s death, Agboola was among those who continued the Yoruba variety entertainment style popularised by the comedian.

He also worked as a presenter at Faaji 106.5FM and appeared in several Yoruba films, where he played humorous roles.

Reports indicate that he had been battling an illness for some time before his death. Details of his burial arrangements have not yet been announced.
