Ned Nwoko Condemns Viral TikToker, Calls for Stronger Social Media Regulation

Senator and businessman Ned Nwoko has criticized a viral TikTok creator who publicly apologized after making false statements involving his name. The apology video, which circulated online earlier this week, showed the young man describing himself as the “liar of TikTok” and pleading with Nwoko for forgiveness.
In a statement posted online on Friday, December 5, 2025, Nwoko condemned the act, noting that creators cannot “lie to make money and turn around to apologize after criminally defaming and hurting people.” He said the incident reflects a wider trend of individuals fabricating allegations for views and financial gain.
Nwoko argued that Nigeria’s digital space is “widely unregulated,” allowing harmful content to spread without consequence. He reiterated his call for a comprehensive social media regulation bill in the National Assembly and insisted that major platforms should be required to establish offices in Nigeria and take responsibility for content shared on their networks.
“The accompanying video, which trended a couple of days ago, is a testament to the fact that Nigeria’s social media space has become widely unregulated,” he wrote. “Laying very serious allegations just to attract millions of views has become a common trait… It is time for social media companies to be mandated to open offices in Nigeria and take responsibility for content on their platforms.”
