Eniola Ajao Opens Up About Cyberbullying, Mental Struggles After Film Release

Popular Yoruba actress Eniola Ajao has opened up about a deeply emotional and traumatic experience she endured due to cyberbullying following the release of her film Beast of Two Worlds (Ajakaju). Speaking during an interview on Biola Adebayo Ent’s YouTube channel, Ajao revealed how unfounded accusations on social media left her emotionally shattered and battling depression.
Instead of receiving the usual support and praise that follows a major movie release, Ajao said she was met with a wave of negativity and online attacks. The actress described the experience as overwhelming and deeply hurtful, noting that the accusations were entirely false but spread quickly, leading to public judgment and harsh criticism.
“I was in a movie location with a heavy heart, knowing fully that I didn’t do what somebody has accused me of doing on social media,” she recalled. The online abuse escalated to the point where a message she received pushed her to a breaking point: “Someone said something to me that made me want to poison myself, and I didn’t eat for 7 days.”
Despite being on set and needing to stay composed, Ajao said she was suffering internally. She tried to protect herself by turning off comments on her social media accounts, but the hateful messages continued to pour in. Her phone, she said, was flooded with insults that seemed too persistent and calculated to be random.
Ajao also suspected that the person behind the abuse might have been hired to carry out a smear campaign, citing the consistency and viciousness of the messages. Her story sheds light on the darker side of fame, where public figures are often targets of malicious campaigns designed to tarnish their image.
Her testimony underscores the urgent need for legal and institutional protections against cyberbullying in Nigeria, especially for those in the public eye. By sharing her ordeal, Ajao has brought attention to the emotional toll of online harassment and the importance of mental health support for those affected.
