Wike Warns AMAC Chairman Against Unauthorized Street Naming in Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, against the unauthorized naming of roads and streets within the Abuja city centre.

According to a report by Daily Trust on Thursday, October 9, 2025, Wike issued the warning during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of new road networks in the Guzape District, which also extends into the AIT neighbourhoods of the Asokoro cadastral zone.

The minister condemned the naming of major roads and streets built and funded by the FCT Administration after private individuals without proper authorization. He emphasized that such honours should be reserved for those who have made significant contributions to national development or the growth of the FCT.

In his words, “We cannot be doing roads and even infrastructure, and you wake up in the morning, I don’t know who writes to you, before I wake up, you name the street and the roads that we are doing with our money.”

Wike directed Maikalangu to refund any payments collected from individuals who had paid to have streets named after them in the city centre. He added that the practice of paid street naming should only apply to satellite towns under AMAC’s direct jurisdiction.

“You don’t just name an important street after somebody when you don’t know where the money is coming from. You will not do that again,” he said.

The minister’s remarks are part of ongoing efforts to enforce order and proper administrative control over urban development and infrastructure projects within the FCT.
