VAR Overturns Chelsea Penalty as Onana Escapes Criticism Despite Pundit Backlash
Chelsea were at the center of a major VAR controversy during their 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Friday night, with goalkeeper André Onana’s actions drawing sharp criticism, according to Football.London.
The flashpoint came in the second half when Onana rushed out and collided with Chelsea’s young attacker Tyrique George inside the box. The referee initially awarded a penalty in Chelsea’s favor, but VAR quickly stepped in and advised a review on the pitchside monitor.
Following the review, the referee reversed the decision, with the Premier League later clarifying that Onana had made contact with the ball before the collision. As a result, play resumed with a drop ball.
Despite the final verdict, the incident didn’t escape criticism. Pundit Jamie Redknapp questioned Onana’s decision-making, saying, “I don’t know what Onana’s doing. What is he doing? Just stay in your goal!”
Roy Keane also weighed in, suggesting that the outcome might have changed if George had shown more composure and tactical awareness. “I think a smarter player with a bit more experience would have knocked it a bit wider and fallen into the goalkeeper,” he commented, although he conceded that the final decision was the right one.
The match was a tough test for Tyrique George, who was making his first senior start for Chelsea. Tasked with going up against experienced defenders such as Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, the 18-year-old found it challenging but showed promise.
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca applauded George’s display, describing him as “brave” and praising his willingness to take on a formidable Manchester United defense. “It’s not easy for him… but he was a threat in behind,” Maresca added, highlighting the club’s ongoing trust in their academy prospects.
