Ibadan Tragedy: Neighbor Claims Husband Fell Asleep While Cooking with Hot Plate Leading to Fire
Residents of Omotara’s Compound in Ori Eru, Idikan, Ibadan North West Local Government Area, Oyo State, are mourning the tragic deaths of a 60-year-old man, known as ‘Baba Yunus,’ his wife, and their eight-year-old grandson, Samuel, who perished in a fire early on Friday. The community has been left devastated by the incident.
According to reports, neighbors recalled hearing the victims’ desperate cries for help as the fire engulfed their home, but the windows were barred, preventing any chance of escape. Despite their efforts, residents were unable to get close to the house due to the intensity of the blaze.
One resident, Mrs. Dupe Ajibade, spoke tearfully about the loss, describing the deceased as well-loved members of the community, especially the wife, who was known for her kindness. She explained that the fire started around 3 a.m., with a loud noise signaling its outbreak. Efforts from nearby residents to contain the flames helped prevent further damage to surrounding homes, but by the time the fire brigade arrived, the house had already been destroyed.
Mrs. Ajibade shared that the fire may have been caused by the husband, who had been cooking with a hot plate and accidentally fell asleep during the process. The family’s tragic death has deeply affected the community, as they were known for their warmth and kindness.
