Lagos Government Allocates N9 Billion for Lawmakers’ Vehicles, Nothing for Education in 2025 Budget

The Lagos State Government’s 2025 budget has raised concerns after it was revealed that N9 billion was earmarked exclusively for purchasing backup vehicles for state lawmakers, while vital sectors like education received no funding.
A report on the 2024 Third Quarter budget performance showed that the Sanwo-Olu-led administration spent N9 billion in Q3 alone on providing official vehicles for 40 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly. This expenditure accounted for 32.8% of the Assembly’s total budget allocation.
In stark contrast, key education projects, such as the renovation of vocational centers in Badagry and Sabo, as well as the upgrading of Lagos State University (LASU), received no funding during the same period. Despite budgetary allocations of N191 million and N8.57 billion for these initiatives, the state failed to release any funds to educational institutions between January and September 2024.
Additional educational projects, including accreditation programs for LASU and the Lagos State College of Health Technology, also went unfunded. The report highlighted that LASU, for example, was allocated over N8.5 billion for building renovations and N824 million for an accreditation exercise, but received no financial support for these initiatives. Similarly, the Lagos State College of Health Technology’s N200 million allocation for an accreditation program was left untouched.
