On This Day: Jos Riots Leave About 700 Dead Over Electoral Dispute

On November 29, 2008, the violence that rocked the city of Jos in Plateau State from November 28 following disputes over the results of a local government election worsened with death toll rising. The unrest, initially tied to allegations of vote rigging, quickly escalated along ethnic and religious lines.

Rooted in longstanding grievances over land ownership, political representation, and indigene status, the 2008 Jos riots turned violent, exacerbated by socio-economic inequalities and political manipulation. Once celebrated for its ethnic diversity and harmony, the city witnessed devastating destruction and loss of life.

Efforts to address the crisis have made slow progress due to deep divisions and recurring tensions among conflicting groups.
