Moghalu Identifies Key Reasons Behind Kamala Harris’s Defeat to Trump in the U.S. Election

After the recent U.S. presidential election, Kingsley Moghalu, former Deputy Governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank, shared his thoughts on Kamala Harris’s loss to Donald Trump.Moghalu pointed out several key reasons behind Trump’s victory, which led to his second term as President.

He suggested that one major factor was lingering gender bias, stating, “Americans are not yet ready for a female President.”He also highlighted that while Barack Obama overcame racial challenges, Harris had to contend with both sexism and racial prejudice. Moghalu noted that Obama’s success was partly due to the timing of his campaign and his mixed heritage, with his white mother possibly making him more palatable to a broader audience.

In Harris’s case, Moghalu argued that both sexism and racial biases were significant hurdles in her path. Economic issues also played a critical role in shaping public opinion, particularly concerns about inflation that persisted throughout the campaign.He observed, “Voter perceptions of the economy, particularly the high inflation earlier in the year, had a big influence on their choices at the polls.”Another challenge for Harris, according to Moghalu, was her inability to connect with the white working-class voters, who remained skeptical of her candidacy.

Moghalu pointed out that Trump’s strong performance in key battleground states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin reflected a preference for “traditional values,” which were better aligned with Trump’s platform, despite his controversial legal troubles.”Harris ran a strong campaign,” Moghalu concluded, “but she was unable to overcome the combination of factors, both positive and negative, that contributed to Trump’s broad support.”
