Shehu Sani Slams FG’s 114% Salary Increase for Elected Politicians
The Federal Government has approved a 114 percent increase in the salary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governors, and all elected politicians in the country.
The development has been trailed by mixed reactions from members of the public, and one of those who reacted was the former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani.
On Wednesday June 21st, it was reported that the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has approved a 114 percent salary increase for all elected politicians, including the President, Vice President, Governors, lawmakers, and judicial and public office holders.
The commission which is saddled with the responsibility of determining the appropriate remuneration for political office holders, said that the implementation of the reviewed remuneration packages was effective from January 1st, 2023.
In his reaction to the development, Shehu Sani revealed that with this 114 percent salary increase for political office holders, a Federal Lawmaker will now earn a monthly salary of about 2 million naira and another 25 million naira monthly as cost for running his office.
He cited that raising the minimum wage of poor workers should have come first before increasing the salary of elected politicians.
In the statement he made via his verified Twitter handle, he said – “Raising the minimum wage of poor workers should come first before that of the elites holding public offices.
With this 114 percent increase, a Federal Legislator will earn about N2 million monthly salary and N25 million monthly running cost for his office. Money derived from the removal of fuel subsidy should be spent wisely.”
