Tinubu Warns Against New Bill To Regulate Christianity In Nigeria
The proposed bill to regulate the practice of Christianity in Nigeria is a violation of the constitution and may cause chaos within the Christian community.
It is the responsibility of the President to ensure that this bill does not become law, as Nigeria is a secular state where every religion should be respected.
It is important to note that the regulation of Christianity in Nigeria has been a controversial issue for a long time. Many Christians have expressed their concerns about the government’s interference in their religious practices.
The proposed bill has sparked outrage among Christians, who believe that it is an attempt to suppress their religious beliefs.
The Chairman of the Human and Constitutional Rights Committee, African Bar Association, Sonnie Ekwowusi, has claimed that a bill is set to pass in Nigeria that will regulate the practice of Christianity.
In an interview with Arise Tv news, Ekwowusi stated that this bill is a violation of section 38 of the 1999 constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion, thoughts, and conscience.
He said, ”Nigeria is a secular state, the state has no right to interfere with the way religion is practiced in Nigeria. There is a separation between the State and the Church.
The State cannot interfere with the way Churches are run because these are two different entities. There is a new bill to regulate the practice of Christianity in Nigeria. The bill is going far to say there will be a council in Abuja for education.”
Ekwowusi further explained that the implementation of this bill will lead to chaos within the Christian community as there will be limited freedom of expression. He emphasized that it is the responsibility of the President to ensure that this bill does not become law. Nigeria is a secular state, and every religion should be respected.
