Coalition Urges NNPCL to Eliminate ‘Hidden’ Fees to Reduce Petrol Prices to ₦400 per Litre

According to a reports on Sunday, October 13, the Coalition for Energy Reforms and Good Governance has officially requested that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) eliminate hidden fees related to Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

This request aims to make fuel more affordable and reduce the financial burden on many Nigerians.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Dr. Jonathan Amande, the coalition’s Executive Director, expressed concern over the recent increase in petrol prices, which has caused significant frustration among the public. Many citizens are questioning why prices are rising, particularly since the fuel is produced domestically.

The coalition pointed out that hidden charges on fuel, along with known costs such as premiums, inspection fees, and regulatory fees from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), are driving up the prices at the pump.

They noted that these additional fees, including those imposed by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), are unnecessary and prevent local refineries from being able to offer competitive prices.

The coalition is confident that if these hidden charges were removed, the Dangote Refinery could significantly lower fuel prices, potentially bringing them down to around ₦400 per litre.
