Akpabio Mocks Gov. Okpebholo for ‘Retiring’ Oshiomhole, Former Governor Hits Back
During a valedictory session on Wednesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio sparked a lighthearted moment in the Senate by suggesting that Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo might “retire” Senator Adams Oshiomhole if Okpebholo returns to the Senate after his governorship term.
The playful exchange took place while honoring Governor Okpebholo, who had previously represented the Edo Central Senatorial District before becoming governor.
Akpabio joked with Oshiomhole, saying, “Distinguished Senator Oshiomhole, before you stop, I thought he was from your senatorial district?”
Oshiomhole quickly clarified, “No, sir, he’s from Edo Central.”
Akpabio continued, “Okay, otherwise he may retire you when he comes back.”
Oshiomhole, smiling, responded, “By the time he’s coming back, I might already be retired. If you add eight years to the current figure, I do not intend to do three terms here.”
Okpebholo won the Edo governorship election on September 21, 2024, defeating PDP’s Asue Ighodalo and Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata.
